Frequently asked dance questions Hornsby Wahroonga

At Jigsaw Dance Studio Hornsby Wahroonga we try and make our dance experience for dancers and especially their parents and smooth and streamlined as possible. We do of course get some pretty regular questions from dancing families about the rules in place at our dance studio. To assist we have created a Frequently Asked Dance Questions page to help you out with some of the regular questions.

Q: Can mum and dad watch the dance class?

A: First time parents of the younger groups may watch the beginning of the first class to help settle dancers in. After this we find that the children respond much better without parents and siblings in the studio. However, after many years of experience, special tactics are used for those who have trouble separating from their parents, so don’t worry if it takes your dancer a couple of weeks to feel comfortable and participate.

For all other classes, parents are not permitted to enter or be present in the studio once class has commenced. It is distracting and unsettling for all the dancers. We will give the parents a chance to have a sneak peak for the last 10mins of class during the final week of the term 1 and 3.

Q: Is it compulsory to perform in the end of year dance concert?

A: Our concerts are not compulsory but highly recommended. It’s a fun and entertaining experience for everyone involved and a great way for your dancer to show off all their hard work they have done through-out the year. Our concerts are designed to be pressure free and as relaxed as possible for everyone involved.

Our end of year concert is usually the 2nd Sunday in November, so the dancing year finishes before the massive rush and commitments of Christmas start.

Q: Can we enrol to dance classes after the term has started?

A: Yes – we accept new students throughout the year. Just email us at dance@danceclasseshornsby.com.au for an information sheet and timetable.

Q: Does Jigsaw Dance Hornsby break for school holidays?

A: Yes – we dance within the NSW Schools Terms, therefore following NSW School holidays and Public Holidays (except our starting week of the year and our finishing week of the year).

Also, our first week back always starts on a Monday (unless it’s a Public Holiday) even if your child’s school has a pupil free day.

Q: Do I need to buy dance uniform or shoes before I enrol?

A: No – dancers trying classes for the first time are encouraged to come in comfy clothes and sneakers. Uniform, shoes and accessories can be purchased at the studio either on class days or at the start of the year at our Registration and Discount Uniform Day.

Q: How can I pay for dance classes?

A: We have a range of options to pay for your dance classes. Cash, Direct Debit, Personal Cheque, money order and Credit Card.

A little bit about our dance classes in 2016

In all of our classes we are dedicated on keeping a fun, vibrant and positive learning environment while nurturing each and every child to achieving their best. Students are not placed in classes based primarily on their age, but experience, ability and friends are important factors that can determine what class is best suited for them.  The class descriptions are listed below.

This modern, and upbeat style is full of fun and laughs, and is a great way to stay active while making new friends. Jazz offers a diverse range of movements ranging from broadway to commercial where all styles of Jazz are taught in class. Classes are set in a fun and caring environment where we focus on making it as enjoyable for everyone as possible, while also giving individual attention to every student.

This is the perfect class for the little Tappers among us! This style is all about sounds and rhythm, and so we focus on teaching the steps in combination with music and beats, so that they can develop the skills of musicality and create sounds for themselves- an essential part of tap. This class is very energetic and incorporates a well-rounded warm up, steps down the room, music, and barre work, to develop the whole dancer.

Originating from France, this graceful art takes on the discipline and poise essential to creating the perfect technique. Although classes are set in a fun, and nurturing environment, the classes are run under a set syllabus, allowing students to develop the skills and technique necessary for Classical Ballet. Ballet is the fundamentals of all other styles of dance and focuses largely on body placement and posture.

Contemporary explores the abstract art of dance, drawing from numerous genres including jazz, ballet, hip-hop, yoga and pilates. Contemporary focuses largely on expressing and portraying various intents and stories and can thus, be represented in many different ways, where is some cases it can be more a fluid progressive from ballet and in others can be more creative and abstract. Contemporary has a large focus on strength and stretch as well as floor work and breathing techniques.

We are so excited to announce that we are offering So You Think You Can Dance choreographer, Jason Winters, Contemporary syllabus at the studio. This was the very first contemporary syllabus to be offered in Australia so we are so excited to share this amazing syllabus with our students. It is a great opportunity for all.
