WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST DANCE CLASS…

A GUIDE TO HELP FIRST TIME DANCE MUMS AND DADS

When you take your little one to a dance class for the first time, you as their parent can feel just as unsure and a little worried about what it is all about? What happens if my child doesn’t participate? What if they cry? Will I get to stay in the room so they feel comfortable? Will they know how to do the steps???

Well I’m here to tell you that these feelings are completely normal! To help ease some of your worries, here is what you can expect when you bring your dancer to class for the first time…

  1. When you arrive, you and your dancer will be greeted by the teacher: Initially the teacher will engage a conversation with your dancer, let them know their name and invite them to come into the class with us. We encourage you to stay in the class and watch so that they (and you) feel more at ease. Sometimes a new dancer may be a little unsure, and may not participate at first, and that’s okay and normal… We have a couple of special tactics we use to help children who have trouble separating from their parents, so don’t be worried if it does takes a couple of weeks for your child to participate and feel comfortable. It can sometimes be necessary for you to join in the class with us so that your dancer feels more comfortable.
  1. The teacher and the children will all gather together: At the beginning of every class, the teacher and dancers will sit down together and have a little chat. They will talk about what we will be learning and the exciting things that are about to happen in class today.
  1. The structure of the class: For our younger classes, we start our lesson with a warm up in a circle so that we can encourage and engage with all of our dancers. After the warmup, we do some drama work to encourage our dancers to use expression and emotion while dancing, as well as storytelling and games. After this we learn travelling steps and specific dance technique on the barre. These steps are taught, revised and added to each week so that if new dancers join us, they are not at a disadvantage if they miss the first couple of classes. We then start putting our newly learnt steps together which eventually becomes our concert dance. At the end of the class we sit down again and discuss what they just learnt, what they need to practice and what exciting things we will be doing next week. We finish every class with a curtsey and thank you then children are led out to meet their parents.
  1. For our new families: At the end of the class, the teacher always likes to have a quick chat with you, just to answer any questions you may still have and to give you any further information you may need.

We hope your dancer enjoys their lesson – it really is a fun and positive experience for all…

Self esteem through performing arts at Hornsby and Wahroonga

Give your child confidence! For years now research is showing that a positive self image and a good self esteem in children is sourced from the positive activities they undertake in their childhood. With so many options available today it can be hard for any parent to decide where best to spend their child and their own time.

So many considerations come in to play when making such a decision. Where it the activity located, when does the activity take place, Is the activity going to take all day or my entire week end and how much will it cost. All perfectly valid questions, but one more should be considered….what will this activity bring to my child’s life?

As what happens on most occasions, the parents choose what their child will do and inevitably due to that decision a child sticks at a certain, sport or activity for many years into the future. Call it familiarity, call it ease or call it habit these activities or sports can form the basis to your child’s health, fitness, friend group and self esteem for many years to come.

What if you let your child decide what they wanted to do. What if they had all the options in front of them and they chose what they enjoyed? This is the tact Miss Jen and the Jigsaw Dance team like to support. Jigsaw Dance Studio has been operating in the Hills District of Sydney for the past 23 years. With several studio locations across the hills district the Jigsaw Dance team have a wealth of knowledge, teachers and experience to allow your little one to explore the world of performing arts.

This year in 2016 Jigsaw Dance comes to the North Shore with a new venue opening at the St Johns Uniting Church located at 61 Coonanbarra Road Wahroonga. With free trial weeks available for all new students, you can come along and try out the Jigsaw Dance philosophy yourself with no costs, no pressure to sign up and really allow your little one to feel the studio out for themselves. Your little one can jump, run and shake their booty to music whilst making friends in a fun and competition free environment. Help Jigsaw bring out the best in your little one at their own pace. Frequently asked dance questions Hornsby Wahroonga

At Jigsaw Dance Studio Hornsby Wahroonga we try and make our dance experience for dancers and especially their parents and smooth and streamlined as possible. We do of course get some pretty regular questions from dancing families about the rules in place at our dance studio. To assist we have created a Frequently Asked Dance Questions page to help you out with some of the regular questions.

Q: Can mum and dad watch the dance class?

A: First time parents of the younger groups may watch the beginning of the first class to help settle dancers in. After this we find that the children respond much better without parents and siblings in the studio. However, after many years of experience, special tactics are used for those who have trouble separating from their parents, so don’t worry if it takes your dancer a couple of weeks to feel comfortable and participate.

For all other classes, parents are not permitted to enter or be present in the studio once class has commenced. It is distracting and unsettling for all the dancers. We will give the parents a chance to have a sneak peak for the last 10mins of class during the final week of the term 1 and 3.

Q: Is it compulsory to perform in the end of year dance concert?

A: Our concerts are not compulsory but highly recommended. It’s a fun and entertaining experience for everyone involved and a great way for your dancer to show off all their hard work they have done through-out the year. Our concerts are designed to be pressure free and as relaxed as possible for everyone involved.

Our end of year concert is usually the 2nd Sunday in November, so the dancing year finishes before the massive rush and commitments of Christmas start.

Q: Can we enrol to dance classes after the term has started?

A: Yes – we accept new students throughout the year. Just email us at dance@danceclasseshornsby.com.au for an information sheet and timetable.

Q: Does Jigsaw Dance Hornsby break for school holidays?

A: Yes – we dance within the NSW Schools Terms, therefore following NSW School holidays and Public Holidays (except our starting week of the year and our finishing week of the year).

Also, our first week back always starts on a Monday (unless it’s a Public Holiday) even if your child’s school has a pupil free day.

Q: Do I need to buy dance uniform or shoes before I enrol?

A: No – dancers trying classes for the first time are encouraged to come in comfy clothes and sneakers. Uniform, shoes and accessories can be purchased at the studio either on class days or at the start of the year at our Registration and Discount Uniform Day.

Q: How can I pay for dance classes?

A: We have a range of options to pay for your dance classes. Cash, Direct Debit, Personal Cheque, money order and Credit Card.
